Paula Wallace, both an educator and entrepreneur, began her SCAD journey over four decades ago. Being an elementary school teacher, she discovered her students’ unbridled imagination and creativity. In an interview, she stated that she felt the need to more as she was nearing thirty. Together with her parents, the Poetters, she designed and built Paula Wallace SCAD – a safe haven for creative and talented individuals. Before she stepped up to begin school, all she thought of was, ‘how do you begin a school?’ She admitted it was a bit daring, but her fears gave her an ultimate chance to succeed.
Finding an old brick armory downtown and selling her yellow Volkswagen bug, she designed a course catalog. Wallace took her time transforming the current Poetter hall into the first Paula SCAD classroom home to the first seventy-one SCAD Bees. This hall has become a home to an unbelievable SCAD story with a seemingly endless student art array. Paula Wallace SCAD has maintained her stand as the best mentor young creative artists will ever have.
