Bhanu Choudhrie wants a solution to critical pilot shortage

Bhanu Choudhrie is the director of C&C Alpha Group, an investment firm based out of London. Although C&C Alpha Group is based in London, it has a global footprint. Bhanu Choudhrie has indicated a keen interest in the aviation industry. He is very familiar with the critical shortage of pilots in the industry and demands a solution for the growing problem. He expects this issue to get worse in the coming decades if not action is taken now.

According to Boeing, there will be a global demand of 800,000 new pilots by 2040. The US aviation industry has only been able to meet two thirds of the demand. The consequences of this shortage can be severe including longer delays and safety risks. The shortage would mean less qualified and less skilled pilots in the air leading to increased safety risk for airlines and passengers. There is an indication that the younger generation is not very interested in the aviation industry and they must be incentivized to encourage them to take up careers in aviation.

According to Bhanu Choudhrie, this current shortage is also because of rising demand for pilots especially in the South East Asia and Middle East. China and India are also crucial players in the aviation industry in the region. China’s rise from an isolated communist nation to a global superpower has meant rapid increase in demand. Similarly, the Indian subcontinent has over 1.4 billion people and a growing economy. This means more demand for pilots. The people in the United States are also more frequently. With falling oil prices, tickets have become more affordable.

Bhanu Choudhrie points out that costly entry requirements tend to deter aspiring pilots. Most new pilots at regional airlines get poor compensation compared to the amount of money they are to spend to get relevant education and certifications. There is a need for congressional action to allow for easier entry of new pilots. Affordable financial aid is one such policy that can allow aspiring pilots to complete the education required without costing too much. The advanced simulators to train new pilots are also very expensive, there should be policies that allow for subsidies to lower the cost and price of these facilities.
