Looking back at their yester years, James ‘Jim’ Dondero and his co-founder Mark Okada do not believe what they have been able to achieve. Surprisingly, the duo has steered Highland Capital Management (HCM), a private asset management firm based in Dallas into greater heights.
When James Dondero shared the idea to start a private asset management company approximately 30 years ago, all he could think of is a company whose ultimate future was to have additional offices across the USA.
To James Dondero’s surprise, the firm has surpassed that dream by far. Today, exactly 28 years after founding HCM, the company has offices spread across three continents with additional offices scheduled to be opened later. According to James Dondero, the second-largest office is located in NYC with others in Singapore and Seoul to carter for Asian clients.
The Buenos Aires in Argentina and Sao Paulo in Brazil services clients from Latin America. Some of the top products HCM deals with include mutual funds, hedge funds, investment funds, fixed income markets, global public equities, structured investments, high-yield bonds, leveraged loans, and scores of other structured products.
Although James Dondero sits as the company’s president, he is not alone. Others who hold high positions in the company include Mark Okada, the co-founder and CIO and Trey Parker. To help serve thousands of the company’s clients, James Dondero has also brought on board 115 employees. While most of the employees work from the headquarters, dozens of others work from the other five offices.
After working for the company since it was founded, for the first time, the company’s president, James reported in 2018 that HCM has garnered a whopping $13.9 billion worth of assets, making it one of the largest private asset management firms not only in the United States of America but also in the world.
