Betsy DeVos is all over the internet after Trump chose her to be America’s leader in the Education Department. One might imagine people are talking about her because of her role, but that’s not the case. DeVos has become a bit of a joke, which is not uncommon regarding Trump’s administration.
People laughed at her because of the way she presented herself to the Senate. Each person chosen by a president has to go through the Senate. This governmental body has to approve of these picks before they’re given their assigned jobs. For the most part, Americans didn’t pay attention to this role until she came along. Betsy was asked all sorts of questions that anyone in this position would know, yet she failed to answer adequately.
A few times, people in the Senate had to explain concepts to her like she was a child. It’s safe to say she didn’t appear ready for these responsibilities, yet she was confirmed nonetheless. The good thing about all this is she took the hits like a champ.
Behind the scenes, she thought it was okay that she didn’t look too competent. She took all of this as a learning opportunity. She might not know much about the role she’s been given by the president, but she was going to work hard to accomplish something.
Betsy may not know the details of her new job, but she wasn’t someone to back down from a challenge. Back in Michigan, her home state, she was known for her strength and determination. She was able to change some minds about school choice. For some time, conservatives have been trying to convince Americans to embrace private schools and religious schools, and she was able to do that in her state.
Trump chose someone like him who wasn’t exactly experienced but was more than willing to learn. He chose someone who was a believer in conservative values because he knew that kind of person could make him proud. Betsy has been given a chance to make a difference in this department. She promised Americans that she’ll support public education as anyone else would.
It seems Americans have no choice but to take her at her word, but if her past is any indicator, public school supporters need to keep an eye on her. The truth is her Senate hearing might have been a disservice. According to those who know her best, like Republican Mike Cox of Michigan, she’s the kind of person who can make things happen.
