Andrew Chung Has Business In His Blood

The Value of Hard Work

For San Francisco based investor and 1955 Capital founder Andrew Chung business comes naturally. Although he flirted with the idea of becoming a recording artist at one point, he was always drawn to the the world of business perhaps due to the fact that as a son of Chinese immigrants he was given the opportunity at the young age of 5 to learn the ins and outs of their Chinese restaurant. In his sit down interview with Venture Beat Andrew Chung discussed this and numerous other business related topics.

Learning at a Young Age

When discussing his early childhood of helping the family run their San Francisco area Chinese restaurant Andrew Chung talks about learning tax calculations, the register, and interacting with both customers and vendors. All of these things helped him better understand the challenges of entrepreneurship while also helping to develop his work ethic.

Breaking into the Tech World

As a student in the mid 1990’s Andrew Chung talks about launching his first tech based startup which marketed web apps in the New England area. While his family encouraged him to take a more traditional career route such as studying to be a doctor or an investment banker, he turned down an offer from Goldman Sachs to instead work for a new startup at the time called Trilogy. He made this choice in part because of an unrelenting passion to discover the next big thing and perhaps change the world for the better. He continues to pursue these goals at the helm of his current organization 1955 Capital which invests in both American and European technologies.

What to Look for in Entrepreneurs

According to Andrew Chung, he looks for those he would consider “rock stars” in their specific fields. Passion, drive, and a solid understanding of the steps that are required to get an idea off the ground is also very important when deciding on whether or not to invest in an entrepreneur as well.
